ShAFF Lowepro competition finalists in public vote

With just a fortnight left before the winner is decided in the 2014 ShAFF Lowepro Adventure Photograph Competition, the shortlisted six entries are picking up votes in the online part of the vote. It's easy to vote - simply like an image on the MyOutdoors' Facebook page will be combined with votes taken during the festival, where the images will be on display, to give an overall winner.

The six shortlisted images have now been printed and framed ready for exhibiting at the festival as part of the free ShAFF Lowepro Adventure Photography Exhibition. Visitors will be able to vote for their favourite picture throughout the festival with a winner decided by the combined online and festival votes on the Sunday afternoon.
We are really grateful to Dave Mycroft at MyOutdoors for making one unique framed print of each of the short-listed images available for sale for £70 each with the proceeds going to the Sheffield Hospitals Charity to help raise £5,000 to buy a satellite blood fridge at the city's Northern General Hospital Major Trauma Centre - the destination for many injured climbers from the Peak District. (See below for framing details).
This year's competition saw literally hundreds of entries from around the world with over 70 making it through to the selection phase where four judges compiled the shortlist. With two professional adventure and sports photographers joined by a representative of sponsors Lowepro and MyOutdoors' Editor, Dave Mycroft, the panel of judges each compiled their personal top 10 list - a process which gave instant results with one image appearing on every list and 4 images appearing in 3 out of 4 lists! Selecting the final image for the shortlist was as difficult a process as choosing the first 5 was easy but after strong arguments in favour of several images with 2 top 10 appearances a consensus was finally reached. The shortlisted images are:
Paragliding - Tuncer Tunc
"Since this is a Single Shot competition the images need to display certain amount of energy, I’d like to see photog trying to create an interesting frame rather than record what they see with their eyes." said Lukasz Warzecha, adventure sports photographer and filmmaker, during the shortlist selection.
Climber on the Aonach Eagach - Andrew Marshall
Commenting on this selection Natalie Littlehales, from sponsors Lowepro, said: "I just loved how this image illustrated a sense of adventure and beauty within the natural landscape. The lone figure against the backdrop of the mountain demonstrated the pure scale of the shot perfectly plus the composition of the snow and shadows work really well. The Aonach Eagach is renowned as one of the most famous hillwalking challenges in Scotland and this picture explains why."

Commenting on the decision process and this image top mountain bike and adventure photographer Geoff Waugh said: "That is one tough thing to do. I agree with Lukasz - getting to the top of a mountain and then simply recording the view isn't enough (for me) -there has to be some kind of artistic merit as well as the physical (which only the taker of the image actually felt!). My out and out winner is the three kids jumping in unison into the sea."

Lukasz Warzecha, summed this entry up with "I adore it... lots of spontaneity it that shot... just imagine the situation... the tension... are we allowed to do it... let's do it...! That's probably the strongest single entry in the competition... looking at it I just want to find out more... what happened next..."
Walking in Scottish Mountains - Richard Newton
Commenting on the image MyOutdoors Editor Dave Mycroft said "I love the feeling of being small in a big expanse this image generates and how it's enhanced by the single trail of fotprints heading into the distance. The sense that it's an accessible and achievable adventure rather than an extreme one adds to its qualities"
Water Walking at Durdle Door - Jon Chubb
"It came as no surprise that this image appeared in every judges top ten" said Dave Mycroft, "it has that essential ingredient of any adventure, a real sense of fun and doing something out of the ordinary"
