ShAFF Films Brighten Up Antarctic Winter

1st Apr 2014

Halley Antarctica 2014

During British Summer Time, life for the scientists at the British Antarctic Survey base starts to get colder and darker heading into winter with temperatures as low as –50°C, blizzards that reduce the visibility to just a few metres, and 24-hour darkness for 105 days when the sun is permanently below the horizon.

That’s why each year as the clocks go forward here in the UK, we team up with our download partners SteepEdge to send the Halley VI research station some of our favourites from the Sheffield Adventure Film Festival to brighten up their dark days and nights.

Festival Director Matt Heason says:  "I spend many long dark winter evenings every year watching film submissions for the Sheffield Adventure Film Festival but that's nothing as compared to the sub-zero temperature and continual darkness that the British Antarctic Survey team have to cope with.  We hope that sending them our selection of the best adventure sports films via our download partners at SteepEdge Films will keep them entertained throughout the winter, though I guess our snowboard 'Mission Antarctic' might be a bit of a busman's holiday for them."

Kevin Hallam, Winter Communications Manager at Halley, said, “We have now entered the 2014 Winter Season at Halley. The last ship back north set sail in February, leaving us here for the season and quite isolated from the outside world. As the nights are drawing in we have enjoyed watching the films as a reminder of all the fantastic locations and adventures going on back home. We have recently been out enjoying our winter trips in the hinge zone and have spent a lot of time in the tent talking about the various films!”

There will be a card to sign at the Showroom Workstation over the festival weekend to send your best wishes to the Halley scientists.
