Andy Kirkpatrick stands in for Alastair Lee at ShAFF

2nd Apr 2014

Sheffield Adventure Film Festival patron Andy Kirkpatrick will take the place of film director Alastair Lee (Posing Productions) in our opening session of this year's Sheffield Adventure Film Festival at 19.00 on Friday 4th April.

TheLastGreatClimbAl_Lee3_2bFestival Director Matt Heason said, “We’d like to thank our patron Andy Kirkpatrick for kindly agreeing to stand in for Alastair Lee for our opening Friday night screening of his film The Last Great Climb, following the death of Alastair’s friend Sean Leary who was recently killed in a BASE jumping accident.  As well as introducing his film, Alastair was due to give a 'Behind the Lens' lecture.  Understandably Alastair doesn’t feel he’s in a position where he’ll be able to entertain an audience with a talk about how the film, which features Sean, was made, let alone sit and watch the film in front of an audience.”

Andy Kirkpatrick“Climber, author and stand-up Andy Kirkpatrick has recently returned from Antarctica, where the Last Great Climb was filmed.  He will present the film and give a short talk to accompany it.  Speaker fees will be donated to the fund set up to support Sean’s widow.”

“We’d like to offer our heartfelt condolences to Sean’s friends and family.  Though we’d never met Sean, we’ve watched so many films that he’s featured in over the year’s - including another of this year’s films, The Sufferfest - that we feel like we know him.  It’s a sad, sad loss to the climbing world.”

Andy was due to take part in our Saturday night expert panel discussing Risk & Reward in adventure sports on Saturday night with 'The Limbless Mountaineer' Jamie Andrew raising money for Sheffield Hospitals Charity.  Andy's grateful that Joe Beaumont is able to take his place.  In May 2011 Joe, an experienced climber, mountain biker and sky diver, fell 40 metres from a rock face in the Lake District. Though his injuries were incredibly severe his resilience and determination kept him alive and he began a very long and painful recovery whilst undergoing multiple operations on different parts of his body. In the Frame - Little Chamonix follows Joe as he takes his first steps back on rock.  You can watch In the Frame as part of our Climb Films 1 session.

You are still able have the rare opportunity to see Alastair's photography in our free Lowepro Adventure Photo Exhibition in the Workstation, organised by MyOutdoors, which is now open and runs until April 11th.

“If anyone has already bought tickets and would like a refund please call the Showroom Box Office. We hope that you will understand the change given the circumstances, and will be more than happy to come and listen to Andy on Friday and Joe as part of our panel following Jamie's talk and film on Saturday.”
