ShAFF Shows Why Sheffield Is UK’s Outdoor Capital City
9th Feb 2015

2015 marks Sheffield Adventure Film Festival’s 10th birthday (March 20-22). To celebrate there will be a special Made in Sheffield screening of locally produced adventure sports films, presented by Sixt Rent A Car, as well as a Friday night party for Sheffield’s local athletes, hosted by BMC TV and Creative Sheffield.
The weekend long festival – presented by Rab and supporting Sheffield’s Helipad Appeal – attracts more than three thousand visitors. With 116 of the best adventure, extreme sports and travel films handpicked from all over the world, organisers (Grindleford based Heason Events) reckon they now show more films than any other adventure festival anywhere in the world.
The festival video trailer has been produced by Peak District filmmakers Polished Project with a voiceover by Sheffield climber and author Niall Grimes and soundtrack by Sheffield band ‘I Set The Sea On Fire’.
And festival organisers have commissioned a brand new logo from Peak District graphic designers Design Everything and new social media strategy devised by Sheffield based digital innovation company Beautiful Everything.
Festival Director Matt Heason says, “Sheffield is a magnet for world-class runners, bikers and climbers like Steve Peat and Shauna Coxsey. There are also many award-winning filmmakers based here. As a festival we’ve made a real effort to bring on talented young filmmakers like Sheffield Hallam University student Ed Birch and former student Tom Ivor Richards.”
“The ShAFF submission process is really competitive with hundreds of films submitted from all over the world. 25 of the 116 films have a local connection making it the first year we’ve had enough locally produced films to put on a dedicated ‘Made in Sheffield’ session.” Click here for full list of local films.
“It’s really heartening to see the city pull together with support from so many local companies and organisations like Derbyshire outdoor equipment specialists Rab and Sheffield running store Accelerate as well as the City Council and the Star and Telegraph to pull off a truly world class event. We’re also very proud to be supporting Sheffield Hospital Charity’s Helipad Appeal with a suggested £1 from every ticket and all proceeds from our ShAFF Classics film loop going to the charity.”

More about Sheffield and ShAFF
Sheffield lays justifiable claim to being the outdoor capital city of the UK with two-thirds of people taking part in outdoor recreation – more than 6% above the national average. The city also has the highest household spend on outdoor equipment in the country, and more than 200 outdoor equipment businesses.
And with the Peak District on the doorstep, you can mix relaxing and eating popcorn with getting out on some of the UK’s best climbing, running and cycling routes just minutes away.
Films are screened by themes with four Climb Film sessions, three Run Film and three Bike Film sessions plus Ski & Board, Mountaineering, Surf & Kayak, and the best-selling Adrenaline Films as well a new ‘Made in Sheffield’ film screening. There are also family-friendly Young Adventurer screenings for kids from primary school up to teenagers.
Festival Director Matt Heason has been digging through the archives and will present his pick of the past decade’s best films in a special ShAFF Classics screening. Other highlights include a ‘Women In Adventure’ session dedicated to promoting female athletes and filmmakers and the Lowepro Adventure Photography Exhibition.
Held at the art-deco Showroom Cinema – the biggest independent cinema outside London – there is a great vibe with food, music and a licensed bar. You might even make yourself some cash taking your old outdoors equipment along to the second-hand kit sale.
