It's our 10th birthday and to celebrate, Festival Director, Matt Heason, is picking his top films from the past decade.

This is a two hour continual loop of films you can drop in and out of.  If you arrive part way through the loop, you can simply watch until the loop finishes and continue watching the next loop until you catch up!  Simple. Note that the session is subject to capacity - i.e. if the room is full when you arrive you will need to wait for somebody to finish watching the loop before entering yourself.

All proceeds from this session will go to the Sheffield Hospitals Charity Northern General Hospital Helipad Appeal.  Thank you to all the filmmakers who have waived their licensing fees to allow us to do this.

First entry is 18.30 Friday and 10.30am on Saturday and Sunday.  Last entry is 9pm.

2015 - Danny MacAskill - The Ridge (8 mins)
One of the stand out films from this year. Combines adventure with top class filmmaking, amazing stunts, and some fine British weather and scenery as Danny MacAskill ‘rides’ along the Cuillin Ridge.

2014 - Road From Karakol (25 mins)
Possibly my all-time favourite film that we’ve shown at ShAFF. It’s packs a lot into its short running time – great scenery, some raw emotion, a beautiful score, and at its very heart, a proper ‘out there’ adventure. The fact that it was all filmed by the protagonist makes it all the more impressive and a real lesson in what can be achieved on solo trips.

2013 - All I Can - Imagination (5 mins)
Editing doesn’t come tighter than this. The late JP-Auclair skis through a dreary looking ski town via a series of tricks and stunts set to a brilliant sound track. I love the subtle touches like the opening scene with the explosion of birds, and the sign on the bus at the end.

2012 – Into Thin Air (9 mins)
Another proper adventure film. Two mountain bike riders walk their bikes to the summit of some impressively snowy Alpine peaks and ride back down. I really rate a film that purports to show somebody doing something that few if no other people are doing and this does exactly that. How many people have bunny-hopped a crevasse?

2011 - Dark Side Of The Lens (6 mins)
Another of my all time favourites. I have a friend who cries each time he watches it. It’s poetry without being stuffy. It’s art without being pretentious. Surfer and surf photographer Mickey Smith captures the essence of what he does and why he does it in a magic short film. The list of injuries he’s suffered in the line of ‘work’ is staggering.

2010 - Kranked Revolve (11 mins)
Reasonably early mountain bike eye candy the end sequence as 4 young riders burn down through a forested North Shore course somewhere in British Columbia is choreographed to perfection and has a great soundtrack to boot.

2009 - Grit Kids (20 mins)
Essentially an early character study of Pete and Katy Whittaker, local climbers who, over the years, have consistently made the headlines for their pure and ethical ascents in the Peak District and further afield. Pete especially has gone on to embrace the adventurous spirit that ShAFF likes to promote, with a series of nuts challenges that have made him famous the world over. This is an early look at the mind and talent of Pete.

2008 - Zoltan (5)
There’s not enough humour in adventure film. Zoltan is a timeless classic as he sets about entering a white water kayaking event on his tractor tyre inner tube, much to the displeasure of the officials.

2007 - Esoterica (15 mins)
Another film local to Sheffield. Slackjaw Productions produced this delightful short, which once again embodies the Spirit Of Adventure, as one of several chapters in their critically acclaimed follow up to Hard Grit, Hard XS. In the film John Arran and Shane Ohly climb the routes listed in the Esoterica section of classic Peak District guidebook On Peak Rock. It’s a challenge that surely set the scene for the likes of Pete Whittaker / Ton Randall and Alex Honnold / Cedar Wright to follow I the footsteps of ;-)

2006 - Balancing Point (6 mins)
Not strictly adventure film, but a delightful short that wowed audiences at the very first ShAFF. Danny Brown performs magical feats of rock balancing with some rudimentary reverse camera work.
