As part of our ShAFF Fringe Festival we're going to be running a series of what we're calling ShED talks. In a nod to the popular TED Talks these are going to follow a similar format, short talks from a wide variety of speakers on subjects that they know passionately. They might be about a particular area of expertise or a cause that they feel strongly about that might need additional support or even a pitch for an up and coming project or planned expedition.

The aim is to provide a platform for people within the outdoor and adventure industry to speak to a captive and interested audience. The talks will be recorded and then published on ShAFF's YouTube channel, providing the talker with a tool to gain a bigger audience online for their cause.

This year is the start of this element of the festival, so the programme is lighter than we expect to have in the future, but we hope it will generate enough interest to allow us to grow this next year and have a much wider programme.

If you're interested in speaking yourself this year or next then get in touch with a quick review of what you'd like to talk about and we'll look into getting you involved.  ***We still have 10 minute slots available for this session***

A series of 10 minute talks by:

JerryAylmer_webJerry Aylmer - Adventurer

The Delicate Giants of Mozambique
Jerry takes us through his experiences of diving off the coast of Mozambique with some of the largest sea creatures found on the planet. Whilst sharing the experience of diving in close proximity to such big underwater creatures is a story in itself, Jerry also shares what he's learnt whilst out there about the real threat to these amazing creatures habitats from human activities. He talks about the need for conservation and research in these areas, but also the dedication to this cause by and series of different hard working organisations and what any of us can do to help solve this issue.

LeonMcCarronLeon McCarron - adventurer, filmmaker, writer and motivational speaker.

The Importance of taking a journey
Leon strongly believes that there is much to be gained by all of us setting out on a journey of one form or another - whether that be simply exposing ourselves to new environments, the chance to disconnect from our busy lives for a while, or the myriad other benefits that come when you travel from one place to another. Based on his experiences of travelling tens of thousands of miles by human power over the last few years, he argues that the journey need not be big, just that it must be new and challenging, and in his ShED talk he will explain fully why he thinks this can be a life changing action.

Ian-Burton-Profile-Web.Ian Burton - Professional filmmaker and photographer

Living the Drea... (nightmare)

Ian takes us through the challenges he faced as a one man director/cinematographer/adventurer embarking on an journey that in itself was a challenge that most wouldn't want to take on, let alone ensuring that the whole journey was captured on film in way that would bring viewers on that journey with its protagonists. What had started out as a dream for Ian was slowly turning into a nightmare, he need to find a way to achieve all of his goals without losing integrity on any of them. Along this journey Ian learnt a lot about himself and managing his own skills, capabilities and honing his craft, but also some really practical tricks that made sure he got home not only in one piece but with all the material he needed to create what is now an award winning film. Ian shares these learnings and a few of the tricks he picked up along the way in his ShED talk.
